Snitzel's Jewel races up to trackwork form

Saturday 13 July 2013, 1:43pm

A winning midweek track gallop against Group One-winning stablemate Mrs Onassis set the scene for Snitzel's Jewel to cause an upset at Warwick Farm.

Trainer Gerald Ryan came to Warwick Farm on Saturday confident the $8.50 chance could win the 1000m two-year-old handicap in which Short Shift was the dominant $1.90 favourite.

Glyn Schofield took the reins for his first ride back after a working holiday in South Africa and didn't have to work too hard to get Snitzel's Jewel home 1-1/4 lengths in front of Let's Frolic ($9).

Short Shift led the field into the straight but weakened to finished 3-3/4 lengths from the winner in fifth place.

"We put blinkers on her today just to help her concentrate," Ryan said.

"I was very confident after she worked with Mrs Onassis. She finished 1-1/2 lengths in front of her and two-year-olds just don't do that.

"Today was a test for her to see how she will measure up. I think she will and we will look at the fillies series (Princess) with her.

"She is a favourite of mine and I think she will have no trouble getting up to 1400 metres."

Snitzel's Jewel, who cost the Darby Racing syndication company $20,000, won her debut at Gosford in February and was sent for a spell with the spring racing in mind.

The first leg of the Princess Series is the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on August 24 with Ryan likely to give Snitzel's Jewel one more start in the interim.
