Daytona Grey left to fly flag for McDonald

Friday 19 October 2012, 6:39pm

With Southern Speed out of the Caulfield Cup, trainer Leon Macdonald will focus his attention on Daytona Grey at Saturday's meeting.

Connections withdrew last year's Caulfield Cup winner on Friday with concerns over her wide barrier and the weight she had to carry.

Daytona Grey claimed an upset win at Moonee Valley last month, sent out at $21 despite a home town win at Morphettville in Adelaide at his previous start.

The three-year-old takes another step up in grade in the Listed Gothic Stakes at Caulfield to determine whether he continues his Melbourne campaign.

"His work was super on Tuesday morning and if he runs up to that he will do well," Macdonald said.

"The Carbine Club Stakes on Derby day is the race we've picked out so he's got to run well to go into that and I'm sure he will."

Clare Lindop rode Daytona Grey at the Valley and again has the mount on the gelding who was a $9 chance on Friday.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Magnier was the $3.80 favourite ahead of Limes ($4.80), a distant third to Proisir in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle before his half-length second to Pronto Pronto in the Listed Vintage Stakes earlier this month.

Divine Moon was at $6.50 ahead of Pronto Pronto ($7).

Pronto Pronto and Limes were at level weights when they last met but the former will be carrying equal topweight of 57.5kg with Daytona Grey under the set weights and penalties of the Gothic.

Steep from the Patinack Farm team has 56kg with the rest of the field on 55kg.
