Edmonds yard provides Gold Pearl quinella

Saturday 4 January 2020, 3:53pm

The Toby and Trent Edmonds training partnership provided the quinella for the $125,000 Gold Pearl but from a Magic Millions 2YO Classic view they finished in the wrong order.

Queen Kay ($10) overcame a wide barrier to grab her stablemate and favourite Smart 'N' Sexy ($3.30) in the final 100m.

A daughter of Zoustar, Queen Kay is not a Magic Millions sales horse and not eligible for the $2 million race next Saturday.

Smart'N' Sexy is a Magic Millions horse and needed the first prize of $72,500 to make the field next week.

She did pick up a further $22,500 which lifted her to a total of $45,000 which might get her into the emergencies.

Toby Edmonds said he had a big opinion of both fillies who he felt could be top-class.

"I suppose it was unfortunate for Smart 'N' Sexy but they both went very well," Edmonds said.

"Queen Kay has won two trials in the lead up and I felt with any luck from the bad barrier she would be hard to beat.

"We still have blinkers up our sleeve for Smart 'N' Sexy if she gets a Millions run."

Jockey Ryan Maloney said he had been pleased when he got across from the wide barrier but then things had gone wrong.

"Smart 'N' Sexy swept around us and I thought I might have missed the boat. But when she got clear she really knuckled down.

"It was the run of a very good horse."

Edmonds now has the Sydney autumn in mind for Queen Kay.

Matt McGillivray said he had come deep to get a run but the winner had been a touch too strong.

"Maybe with blinkers it might have been a different result but we had our chance," he said.

Tony McEvoy's Bribery ($5.50) came from a long way back to be third and lifted her prizemoney to $40,500 which should not be enough to make the Millions Classic.
