Vorster breaks collarbone in Valley fall

Saturday 25 January 2020, 2:31pm

Jockey Barend Vorster has suffered a broken collarbone in the fall from Manuel in the Group Two Australia Stakes.

Vorster and Manuel came crashing to the turf in the home straight in Friday night's race at The Valley and six-year-old gelding Manuel had to be euthanised.

He was expected to be discharged from hospital on Saturday.

Manuel won eight of his 29 starts and was trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy who had a winner at Caulfield on Saturday, with Jentico taking out the Drinkwise Plate (1400m).

Jentico was ridden by Luke Currie who is the stable's main jockey in Melbourne and after the victory he paid tribute to Manuel who he rode to victory in last year's Group One CF Orr Stakes.

"To all the connections and staff at home, I know they are all very upset," Currie said.

"He's a lovely horse and he won a Group One for us last year. I won the Orr on him and I was pretty sad to see what happened last night.

"It's one of those things.

"Hopefully Barend is OK. I hear this morning he's got a broken collarbone so he'll be out for a little bit.

"It's just sad and commiserations to everyone."
