Glen Ord set for open company debut

Friday 31 January 2020, 10:58am

Tough gelding Glen Ord is a perfect example of not always having to chase expensive bloodlines to buy a successful racehorse.

Glen Ord will make his open company debut in the Osim Handicap (1800m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The gelding has been a consistent performer for Beaudesert trainer Diane Murphy, winning six races and running 15 minor placings despite his obscure pedigree.

Glen Ord is by Zenyawin, an unraced King Of Happiness stallion who covered a handful of mares while standing at stud in Bundaberg, north of Brisbane.

His dam Lets Get On It, is by Distinctly North, and won a race at Esk and as a broodmare has produced another Eagle Farm winner in Glenturret.

Murphy said Glen Ord deserved his chance to step up to open company in Brisbane.

"He really has been a good bread-and-butter horse for us. He always tries hard," Murphy said.

"Glen Ord has won his past two starts at 1800 metres and will carry only 52kg after a claim.

"We have had a couple setbacks with wash-outs but he did work strongly this week.

"We also had him in a Class Six on Saturday but 1800 metres appears his best distance."

Murphy, who has worked in New Zealand and Japan, has had a steady stream of winners since setting up her base at Beaudesert, south-west of Brisbane, about five years ago.
