Vaucluse Bay salutes again at Caulfield

Saturday 1 February 2020, 2:33pm

A rise in weight and distance has not stopped Vaucluse Bay from registering a second victory at Caulfield in the space of eight days.

After winning over 2000m a week ago, Vaulcluse Bay was back at the track on Saturday to score over 2400m in the All Star Mile @ MRC March 14 Handicap.

Carrying 54kg in his half-head win over Home By Midnight last Saturday, Vaucluse Bay rose to 56.5kg on Saturday while meeting that galloper on 2kg worse weight terms.

It mattered little as Vaucluse Bay, under a well-judged front running ride by Linda Meech, raced to a 2-1/2 length win from last week's runner-up with The Lord Mayor a further long neck back in third place.

Trainer Chris Waller's Melbourne representative Johanne Taylor said the soft track, downgraded from good after early rain ahead of Saturday's program, had played to Vaucluse Bay's advantage.

"At the 2400 metres today Chris thought he might have been a touch suspect, so Linda had to really judge the pace well," Taylor said.

"She did that and the way he (Vaucluse Bay) did it today you could imagine that he could go on with it.

"The soft surface today also played in his favour and on that he should be able to handle a rise in distance going into the future."
