Racehorse trainers come from many varied backgrounds but few as unusual as former radio star Kim Mothershaw who was in the winners' circle at Kilcoy on Wednesday.
Mothershaw was for many years one of Brisbane's leading radio breakfast announcers but when he retired a decade ago it gave him a chance to follow his love for racing.
He often helped out at the stables of the late trainer Merv Lewis which was the basis for him gaining a licence.
Deagon=based Mothershaw has had his share of winners from a small team. most notably with Lights Off who paid $122 when he won at Toowoomba.
There were no triple-figure odds about his Kilcoy winner Corajillo ($2.40) who took out the TAB Plate (800m).
"She likes the short courses and won at Toowoomba over 870m a few runs back and her effort on a heavy track last time was good," Mothershaw said.
"She only cost $4000 so she doesn't owe use anything."
Corajillo gave jockey Josh Oliver an early double after he won on Remember Mary ($2.70).
