Redzel tunes up for Lightning in trial

Thursday 6 February 2020, 5:31pm

Star sprinter Redzel has shown his opposition a clean pair of heels in a barrier trial at Randwick ahead of his next Group One mission.

As is now the custom, Redzel wore blinkers in the second trial of his preparation and was asked to do more than in his first.

The dual Everest winner will head to Melbourne for the Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday week, a race he finished second in by the barest margin two years ago when beaten by Redkirk Warrior.

In the second of two heats on the course proper on Thursday, Redzel beat Quackerjack by 1-1/2 lengths over 900m.

The first of the course-proper trials was over 1000m with Greysful Glamour edging Sweet Deal on the line.

Prince Fawaz was another two lengths away with Pancho and crowd favourite Happy Clapper both working home well to run fourth and fifth.

Happy Clapper will return in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) on Saturday week with Dreamforce, winner of a 1200m-heat on Thursday, also scheduled to resume in the Group Two race.
