Late bloomer Kuttamurra Al keeps winning

Saturday 8 February 2020, 2:40pm

Tough stayer Kuttamurra Al is a prime example of not giving up on a horse too early.

Kuttamurra Al took 21 races to break his maiden but has since won eight races and gone past $200,000 in prize money.

Starting at $5, Kuttamurra Al held on to beat In Your Element ($7) by a short half-head in the Cascade Handicap (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Kuttamurra Al had stints with trainers Robert Heathcote and Ben Currie before going to Lindsay Hatch at Toowoomba.

Hatch has won three races with Kuttamurra Al and believes more are on the way.

"We had him set for the Ballina Cup but he didn't have much luck. He then just peaked near the line when narrowly beaten at Doomben," Hatch said.

"He can keep going for these sort of races in the coming weeks."

Winning jockey Baylee Nothdurft said he had decided to put some pace into the race at the 900m and it had paid off.

The win took Nothdurft to the lead in the senior jockeys' premiership on 40 winners for the season.
