Decision still pending on Super Seth path

Sunday 9 February 2020, 5:51pm

Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth could bypass the C S Hayes Stakes and a rematch with Alligator Blood to instead chase a Group One win in the Futurity Stakes,

The Anthony Freedman-trained colt made a stylish return to win the Group Three Manfred Stakes (1200m) and will be nominated for Saturday's C S Hayes (1400m) at Caulfield.

The C S Hayes is set to feature Queensland's top three-year-old Alligator Blood, who Super Seth narrowly beat in the Caulfield Guineas, as well as star New Zealand gelding Cataylst who will make his Australian debut.

But Freedman's son and assistant trainer, Sam Freedman, said Super Seth may instead run against older horses in the weight-for-age Futurity a week later.

"We're still undecided whether he goes to the C S Hayes or goes to the Futurity," Freedman said.

"He'll be nominated for the C S Hayes and we'll probably work him on Tuesday morning and then make a decision.

"But Alabama Express winning the C F Orr Stakes yesterday probably gives you more confidence if we do decide to go to the weight-for-age route.

"He has come through his run really well so wherever he goes he should be running well."

The Mike Moroney-trained three-year-old Alabama Express won Saturday's weight-for-age Orr, beating the older horses over the 1400m at Caulfield.

Four of Super Seth's five wins have been at Caulfield.

If connections opt to go to the Futurity, Super Seth would probably not run in the Group One Australian Guineas a week later.

"It's probably unlikely we'd back him up, but you never say never," Freedman said.

Freedman said Blue Diamond favourite Hanseatic had come through his impressive win in Saturday's Prelude in good order.

"He licked the bin and seemed fresh this morning so he's come through it well," Freedman said.
