As he gets older it takes Bold Glance a little longer to hit top form but trainer Norm Hilton is confident the seven-year-old is ready to add a first Sydney win to his impressive resume on Saturday.
Bold Glance runs as one of the favoured runners in the Listed Winter Stakes at Rosehill with Nash Rawiller, who aggravated a hip problem in a barrier trial incident on Friday, also expected to be back at his peak after a physiotherapy session.
Hilton relocated his family and his horses from Toowoomba to Newcastle in January. Bold Glance's 10 wins have all been in Queensland but two of his best performances have been in Sydney where he ran third in the 2011 Doncaster Prelude and filled the same position in the main event.
The gelding has had niggling joint problems throughout his career but Hilton says they are manageable as long as he is not over-raced.
"We are always battling to manage his joints and that's why we have spaced his runs and tried to keep him a bit fresh," Hilton said.
"This time in it's taken him a few runs to hit his straps but he's in the right place now and ready to go.
"He ran a good race last time to prepare for this."
Bold Glance finished third, beaten just on two lengths, in a 1500m race at Rosehill on July 1 won by Merlin Mustang from Travolta.
Plans for Bold Glance include a tilt at the Cameron Handicap on his new home track in September.
"He is a handicapper not a weight-for-age horse so we will definitely look at the Cameron at Newcastle," Hilton said.
"We'll also have a look at the Epsom but I'm not so sure he is up to those horses now.
"He's getting a bit older and it makes it hard. But he shows no signs of stopping. He enjoys stable life and he is still competitive so while he wants to race, he will."
Bold Glance was on the third line of TAB's Fixed Odds betting on Friday at $7 with Under The Sun at $3.80 and Mic Mac at $4.60.
