Chris Waller has opted for a gear tweak to help curb the herd instincts of consistent gelding Clever Boy.
The three-year-old is in line to tackle the Primo Smallgoods Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday, a week after he was relegated to second on protest at Warwick Farm.
Waller felt Clever Boy lost concentration at a crucial stage of that race and after mulling it over with owners Graham and Linda Huddy, the decision was made to take the blinkers off and replace them with winkers.
"I've taken the blinkers off to open things up for him a bit," Waller said.
"It seemed like he was looking for his mates the other day, a bit of a herd thing."
Clever Boy has made good progress this campaign.
After resuming with a win at Newcastle he scored a midweek victory at Warwick Farm and again finished first past the post last Saturday, only for Masahiko to be awarded the race on protest.
That hasn't stopped Clever Boy from strutting around the stable feeling pleased with himself.
"He thinks he won last week, we haven't told him he didn't so his confidence is sky high," Waller said.
Waller will also saddle up Relaxed And Happy in the race.
A Rosehill winner over 1200m two starts ago, the gelding was sent out favourite last start but failed to handle the very heavy track.
"I thought stepping him up to 1400 metres might give him a chance to relax on the pace," Waller said.
"He's another one who didn't handle that really heavy track the other day."
Waller's pair are both prominent in betting.
Relaxed And Happy was the $3.60 top pick with TAB fixed odds on Friday with Clever Boy on the fourth line of betting at $6.
