Punters get behind Rawiller in title race

Friday 19 July 2013, 4:59pm

Sydney jockeys' premiership punters are rallying behind Nash Rawiller's late-season pursuit of defending champion Hugh Bowman.

Rawiller is the outsider in a NSW TAB premiership market which was re-opened after Rawiller rode a treble last Saturday to get to within 5-1/2 wins of Bowman.

They both rode a midweek winner but Rawiller has firmed from $4.50 to $2.70 on the strength of an obvious numerical edge on Saturday boosted by his booking for two early Rosehill favourites.

Bowman, who is the TAB's $1.38 premiership favourite, will have one less meeting to fend off Rawiller after a Randwick suspension on Wednesday.

"Five-and-a-half wins is still a big lead but it doesn't surprise us punters want to be on Rawiller given the kind of form he is in," TAB spokesman Matt Jenkins said.

"Combined with Bowman's suspension and Rawiller's good book of rides on Saturday, it looks like it could come down to the wire."

Rawiller has rides in seven races at Rosehill while Bowman has four mounts.

Early markets clearly have the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bull Point and Relaxed And Happy for Chris Waller as two of Rawiller's best rides.

Bull Point is a $2 chance to make amends for a last-start defeat when he carries 59kg in the Forum Group Sprint (1200m).

Rawiller cut short his Randwick barrier trial commitments on Friday because he aggravated a hip injury but he has told Racing NSW he is not in doubt for Rosehill.
