Mr Quickie to continue Mile prep in trial

Sunday 1 March 2020, 3:14pm

All-Star Mile contender Mr Quickie will continue his build-up towards a first-up tilt at the $5 million race in a barrier trial at Cranbourne.

Mr Quickie finished second to Group One winner Homesman in an 1100m-trial at Werribee on February 18 and the gelding is scheduled to trial over 990m at Cranbourne on Tuesday, 11 days out from the All-Star Mile at Caulfield.

The Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie secured his spot in the All-Star Mile, finishing seventh in the public poll with the top 10 offered spots in the 15-horse field.

He has been aimed at the All-Star Mile fresh based on his efforts when third in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington over 1600m in the first start of his spring campaign last preparation.

"He'll trial on Tuesday and he's ticking over really nicely," Stokes said.

"I'm looking forward to the All-Star Mile.

"He will acquit himself well. First-up last time in it was a really good field and he ran super.

"He's shaping up pretty much the same as last time. He's probably just a bit stronger and more mature this time around. So that stands him in good stead."

Damien Oliver is booked to ride Mr Quickie in the All-Star Mile.

The remaining wild card entries will be announced on Monday.

Futurity Stakes winner Streets Of Avalon will take his place after being assured of a place with his win but Saturday's Blamey Stakes winner Fifty Stars is unlikely, leaving four spots to be filled.

Australian Guineas winner Alligator Blood remains favourite for the All-Star Mile ahead of New Zealand mare Melody Belle.
