Griffiths eyes Sydney G1s for Glenfiddich

Saturday 21 March 2020, 1:08pm

As long as borders remain open between mainland states, Robbie Griffiths is planning a trip to Sydney with impressive Mornington winner Glenfiddich.

Griffiths has his eyes on a pair of Group One races at Randwick with Glenfiddich after the two-year-old's victory in the Quayclean Sires (1500m) on Saturday.

It was the maiden victory for Glenfiddich who had contested the Blue Diamond Diamond Series at Caulfield before a last-start second to Amish Boy in the Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic (1200m) at Morphettville on March 9.

Griffiths has always said the best of Glenfiddich would not be seen until the colt steps out in distance and that was shown at Mornington.

Ridden by Noel Callow, Glenfiddich recorded a 2-3/4 length win from Albukhturi with Amish Boy three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Griffiths plans to start Glenfiddich in two Randwick races, the Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 4 and the Champagne Stakes (1600m) two weeks later.

"But we were a little concerned in recent times as to whether or not we could cross the borders and how long racing is going to be restricted by what is going on with the virus," Griffiths said.

"When he came through the Morphettville race so well, we thought coming here was a great opportunity for him and if we get through today, and all goes well, we can get to Sydney.

"That's what he's bred to do and everyone who has ridden him has been telling me to get him over that ground."
