Nothdurft to appeal three-month suspension

Thursday 7 May 2020, 4:46pm

Leading Brisbane jockey Baylee Nothdurft will seek an internal review of a three-month suspension he has received on a handling charge.

Stewards reopened an inquiry on Thursday into Nothdurft's ride on Vega One at the Sunshine Coast on April 25.

Nothdurft rode Vega One when the gelding finished fourth in an Open Handicap (1000m) after coming from last on the home turn.

After the race stewards took evidence about aspects of Nothdurft's ride in the straight and at home turn before adjourning the inquiry.

After taking further evidence on Thursday Nothdurft was charged with not taking all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure Vega One finished in the best possible placing.

Stewards alleged he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and purpose between the 400m and 300m to improve his position to the outside of Ringo's A Rockstar.

Stewards further alleged that leaving the 300m Nothdurft failed to ride with sufficient vigour and purpose to take a run between Just Orm and River Racer.

The third allegation was approaching the 150m until the 50m, Nothdurft failed to ride with sufficient vigour and purpose to take and improve into a run between Tambo's Mate and Just Orm.

Nothdurft was found guilty and sentenced to three months suspension to start on Friday week and finish on August 16.

Nothdurft's master Tony Gollan said the apprentice would seek an internal review.

Nothdurft, who currently leads the metropolitan and state in senior and apprentice premierships, missed last Saturday after serving a seven-day suspension for excessive use of the whip.

He has sought an internal review of a further 13-day suspension imposed for careless riding last month.
