Shamexpress primes for spring carnival

Monday 29 July 2013, 6:11pm

Despite his English campaign letdown where he finished out of the money in his two races, the Danny O'Brien-trained Shamexpress is set to tackle the rich spring racing carnival.

Shamexpress will be among a shipment of horses which will be flown over from England to compete in the leading races such as the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate.

O'Brien is preparing Shamexpress in England, where he finished seventh in the July Cup to Lethal Force and ninth in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The trainer believes the best way to get Shamexpress fit for the spring carnival is to keep him in work in England.

"If we didn't stay there we wouldn't be able to keep working him," O'Brien told racingvictoria.net.au.

"He would have three weeks in quarantine and two weeks at Eastern Creek, whereas this way he can have an uninterrupted run at the spring."

He said Shamexpress would arrive at Werribee along with the first shipment of internationals on September 28.

The $1 million Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 9 will be the key target for Shamexpress, winner of the Newmarket Handicap over the straight course in March.
