Queensland media negotiations are ongoing

Sunday 17 May 2020, 9:41am

The media rights for racing in Queensland have yet to be finalised despite the Brisbane Racing Club re-signing with Sky Channel.

The media rights deal was expected to be finalised by the end of last month with Sky, Racing.com, Channel 7 and Channel 10 all interested in broadcasting Queensland meetings.

Negotiations in Queensland are always muddled because the BRC has media rights to Doomben and Eagle Farm meetings and while Racing Queensland controls the remainder of the state.

RQ was expected to handle all the negotiations but Sky and the BRC inked a deal last week.

No details of the Sky-BRC deal have been released but it is understood to include more showcasing of the sport in the pre and post coverage of meetings.

It is a major win for Sky because in recent months some key Queensland industry figures had been openly campaigning for a change from Sky's long-running hold on media rights in the state.

A Racing Queensland spokesperson confirmed the remainder of the negotiations were ongoing and no date could be put on its likely completion.
