Knight Mariner to undergo further tests

Sunday 12 July 2020, 9:20am

Promising three-year-old Knight Mariner will be taken to the Gatton veterinary hospital on Monday for further examination of his injured pelvis.

Knight Mariner swept to the lead at the 200m and looked certain to win the Group Three Winx Guineas (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast.

However, Wapiti kicked back and beat him by a 1/2 length into second.

An inspection after the race indicated Knight Mariner to be sore and it appeared he had fractured his pelvis.

The gelding was taken to a nearby veterinary complex where he was treated overnight with pain killers and kept comfortable.

Trainer Tony Gollan said Knight Mariner should be ready to travel to the Gatton hospital (Queensland's main horse surgery centre) on Monday.

"At Gatton they are able to do even more complex tests and we will see where he is at," Gollan said.

"Baylee (jockey Nothdurft) said he felt something was wrong 50m out."

"To be frank, he is one of the most promising horses I have ever trained.

"It is terrible for the horse and his owners."

Gollan had a winning double at the Sunshine Coast including the Listed Glasshouse with Krone.

"I was thrilled with Krone's win for her owners but the injury to Knight Mariner left us all feeling flat," Gollan said.

"Hopefully Knight Mariner can recover and be able to race on."
