Pet food pit stop proves costly for Sherry

Saturday 22 August 2020, 6:21pm

A difficult week for apprentice Tom Sherry got even worse at Randwick when he was fined $1000 by stewards for failing to comply with an order.

Sherry, who rode in the first race and had a four-hour gap until his next engagement, sought permission to leave the course to go home and sweat.

The spas generally used to lose weight by jockeys on track are currently closed under COVID-19 protocols.

Sherry was granted permission to leave Randwick provided he went straight home and returned directly to the course.

However, Sherry made a detour to a local shopping centre to buy pet food for his dog, earning the ire of chief stipe Marc Van Gestel.

"It is a matter of some seriousness given the times we're living in," Van Gestel said.

A contrite Sherry pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to comply with the direction of stewards and was fined $1000.

On Friday, Sherry was suspended for four weeks for failing to give the John O'Shea-trained Al Snip every opportunity to win a race at Wyong last month.

Stewards deemed his effort "fell short of the reasonable standard expected".

Sherry will start that penalty on August 31 and can return on September 28.
