Callanish makes it eight from eight

Sunday 21 October 2012, 6:13pm

Unbeaten four-year-old Callanish has raised the bar again with his first stakes victory in Sunday's Listed Seymour Cup (1600m) to take his winning streak to eight.

The Mick Price-trained gelding fought hard under regular partner Dale Smith after being challenged by Over Quota who had to settle for second with Tribal Rock third.

"He was a bit sluggish away today," Smith said.

"I let him get into his momentum and let them (the rest) sort themselves out.

"He took over from the the 1200 and gave me a lot when I asked for it.

"If he lacks anything in ability he makes up for it with heart.

"When it comes down to a dogfight he loves it.

"Mick and the owners have supported me. It goes to show a little person like myself can get the job done."

Part-owner Rob Harding said the 2013 Doncaster in Sydney was a race being talked about for Callanish.

In the other Victorian country Cup action on Sunday, Texan Warney also showed his fighting spirit to win his third successive Horsham Cup (1800m).

With Holly McKechnie aboard as she had been for the previous two years, Texan Warney burst through a gap late to beat Doctor Fremantle by a short neck.
