Grey Assignment will join the growing list of Kelso Wood's spring carnival contenders after his hard-fought win at Doomben on Saturday.
Grey Assignment ($3.80) edged past $1.90 favourite Double Impact to win the Carlton Draught Handicap (1630m) by a short neck, prompting Wood to announce the gelding would join his team of five horses set to campaign in Sydney in the coming weeks.
The Listed Premier's Cup (1800m) at Rosehill on August 31 will be the next goal for Grey Assignment with stablemate Into The Red to contest the Group Three Run To The Rose (1200m) on the same day.
"He's a very honest horse and the 1800 metres of the race at Rosehill will suit him down to the ground," Wood said.
Group One winner Sizzling, along with stablemates Someday and Belltone, will spearhead Wood's three-pronged attack on next Saturday's Group Three Show County Quality (1200m) at Warwick Farm.
Grey Assignment was ruled out of the winter carnival when he suffered a serious leg injury during a tumble at trackwork but Wood has nursed him back to health.
"It was quite a bad injury to his stifle and elbow and we had to spend a lot of time cleaning it out but he's come good now," Wood said.
Apprentice Aidan Holt had Grey Assignment travelling comfortably outside the leader Double Impact in a deliberate strategy devised by Wood.
"We wanted to keep in touch with the leader and try and keep the pressure on him because he was the horse to beat," Wood said.
Trainer Tony Gollan is already thinking ahead to next year's winter carnival with Tornado Miss after she won the Skyracing.TV Handicap (1630m).
"It's good to see her stretch out to a mile and if she can get a touch further she might make a nice horse for next winter," he said.
"The blinkers have been a big help to her, as well as getting her out in distance with that little bit of maturity under her belt."
Gollan paid $175,000 for Tornado Miss as a yearling at the Magic Millions sale.
"She's always shown us a lot and it's just been a matter of patience," he said.
"At the moment it's all about getting her to learn her trade because she pulled hard today and did a few things wrong."
Jockey Glen Colless said Tornado Miss raced keenly in the early stages but settled into a much better rhythm when he allowed her to stride forward midrace.
