Self Sense will be given the chance to prove himself in better company after recording his second successive win at Sandown on Wednesday.
Self Sense, the $2.30 favourite, was happy to sit behind the leaders in the Roy Higgins and Wylie Dalziel Racing Handicap before turning on the speed 200m from home to hold off the Peter Moody-trained Miralago ($5.50) by 1-3/4 lengths.
Ticket To Toorak ($10) finished third, another 1-3/4 lengths away.
Trainer David Brideoake says he will nominate Self Sense for the Victoria Derby.
"He's definitely going to get the trip but whether he is up to that level you don't know," Brideoake said.
He said Self Sense had shown he was ready to step up in class from midweek to Saturday racing.
"I think Saturday races is where it sits for him and I'll find a mile race somewhere for him," Brideoake said.
Jockey Dwayne Dunn said Miralago threatened to take the lead 200m but couldn't go on.
"I thought he had us covered at the furlong but Self Sense went through the gears to run through the line nicely," Dunn said.
The fancied David Hayes entry Razzle Dazzle Rock ($3.60) made a poor start and never recovered before finishing fourth in the six-horse field.
