Nisbet chasing first stakes win at Valley

In-form sprinter Pocket Rockets has produced his best for female jockeys and trainer Tony McEvoy sees no reason to break a winning combination in Saturday's Listed Carlyon Stakes.

And with that, apprentice Kayla Nisbet will get the chance to try to win her first stakes race when she partners the gelding in the 1000m feature.

Nisbet was called on to ride Pocket Rockets at Flemington last start and earned high praise from McEvoy for a patient ride that helped deliver a fourth win in the past five starts for the former Hong Kong sprinter.

In all of his previous five starts, Pocket Rockets has had a female jockey aboard and produced some of his best performances.

McEvoy acknowledged it was against the norm to opt for a 3kg-claiming apprentice in a stakes race when they can't use an allowance, but said he was happy to stick with what had been working.

"She rode against these guys last start and rode him beautifully and won," McEvoy said.

The trainer believes the sprinter can be successful again in his biggest test to date if things go his way.

"She (Nisbet) will do the same thing again on him and ride him patiently to hit the line strongly," McEvoy said.

Nisbet, daughter of Canberra trainer John Nisbet, wasn't expecting to keep the ride but was thrilled to get the opportunity.

"I didn't expect one (a stakes race ride) at all this year in Melbourne," Nisbet said.

"I've had two rides for my Dad in Listed races before but that was obviously for my Dad and we were good friends with the owners. So it's a lot different to get one for an outside trainer."

With Pocket Rockets "really in the zone", McEvoy is happy to give him his chance in the 11-horse field against the likes of the resuming Group One winner Commanding Jewel.
