Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm has celebrated its third successive victory in the Silver Shadow Stakes with Thump breaking her maiden in the fillies feature with a fighting win.

Thump raced on the speed throughout but had to fend off a late surge to win by a short half-head from the favourite Sweet Idea who looked a well-beaten beaten horse halfway up the straight.

Sweet Idea's effort was all the braver as the Golden Slipper placegetter bled from both nostrils.

She has been banned from racing for three months, putting an end to her spring campaign.

Patinack Farm trainer John Thompson said it was a great effort by his team to win the Silver Shadow (1200m) for the third consecutive year following the success of Nechita (2012) and Pane In The Glass (2011).

He was also happy to see the colours the filly carried to victory - the original royal blue, green and gold of Patinack Farm which had been retired when Tinkler decided to downsize his racing operation.

Thompson said both he and Brisbane race caller Alan Thomas had complained to Tinkler about the replacement colours which they struggled to identify.

"The colours have come out of retirement," Thompson said.

"Alan Thomas in Queensland rang up and said `can you go back to your old colours, I'm having trouble spotting the new ones'."

Thompson revealed he had planned to kick-off Thump's campaign in midweek grade but the filly trialled so well at Randwick last Monday he opted to roll the dice and head to the Silver Shadow.

The feature is the opening leg of the four-race Princess Series and Thompson confirmed Thump would progress to the second, the Furious Stakes over the same trip in two weeks.

Thompson won't be in Sydney to see it as he leaves for China on Sunday to oversee 40 horses for an international exhibition meeting late next month.

The Silver Shadow was a wipe out for Waterhouse on two fronts with Greytfilly a late scratching from the race after being injured in the race-day stalls.
