Weir lands first Melbourne metrop treble

Saturday 24 August 2013, 5:11pm

It's shaping up as a big spring carnival for Ballarat trainer Darren Weir.

Weir, who trains Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance de Lune, notched his first Melbourne treble at Moonee Valley on Saturday with Gotta Take Care, Broken and Clang And Bang.

Weir says his success lies in the training facilities at his bases in Warrnambool in southwest Victoria where horses can train on the beach and in the surf and at Ballarat where they run up and down hills over a 7.5km course.

"But they have all been aided by great rides today," Weir said.

Clang And Bang, a winner in his last race at Flemington, started at the generous odds of $9 in the Chandler Macleod Handicap (2040m) and went on to win easily, finishing 3-3/4 lengths ahead of First Course ($21) with favourite Bel Thor ($2.80) third, a half-head away.
