Wordplay to lead Cummings's midweek team

Tuesday 27 August 2013, 3:27pm

A half-sister to sidelined Group One winner Fiveandahalfstar is one of at least three runners Anthony Cummings hopes can stake a spring claim at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Cummings has seven acceptors for the midweek meeting with perhaps Fiveandahalfstar's baby sister Wordplay creating most interest in the TAB Iphone App Maiden Plate (1400m).

The three-year-old filly has already shown Cummings she has inherited enough family ability to be put on a tenative path towards the VRC Oaks.

"We're hopeful of getting her to the Oaks and we're hoping that she will be competitive at Warwick Farm despite the wide barrier," Cummings said.

A daughter of Australia's latest super sire Fastnet Rock, Wordplay made an encouraging start to her career with a close second to Killcareless at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago.

On a day when it was an advantage to race close to the rails and on the speed, Wordplay sat deep without cover.

She was asked to improve four wide from the 400m and kept making ground to finish a neck behind a filly who ran an acceptable race in the Silver Shadow Stakes.

"The form out of the race is sound," Cummings said.

"The horse with race experience got her on the line and she proved the strength of that form by running well in a stakes race on Saturday."

Cummings is hoping More Than Ready colt Wonderbolt will be a more tractable racehorse in the Australian Turf Club Handicap than the one who overcame inexperience to win his only start at Gosford.

"He's still got a bit to learn because he made a few mistakes at Gosford but he has probably improved off that," the trainer said.

Wonderbolt comes from a stallion-producing family with successful sires Snippets, Zizou and Not A Single Doubt figuring in his pedigree.

He is a Caulfield Guineas entry and Cummings expects to get a better line on the colt's immediate future after Wednesday.

First starter Swiggin' runs against stablemate Beach Boy in the Become An ATC Sponsor Handicap (1400m).

Both have been nominated for the Spring Champion Stakes but in a clue to each horse's potential, Swiggin' is also a Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate entry.
