Getting beaten in the Run To The Rose won't be the worst result for promising filly Cluster so long as she runs second in the best lead-up to the only million-dollar race of the Sydney spring carnival.
Cluster, the victim of luckless passage in the San Domenico Stakes when she resumed, needs to figure in the Run To The Rose placings at Rosehill on Saturday to shore up a start in the Group One Golden Rose.
With $25,450 prize money, Cluster was nowhere to be seen in an updated Golden Rose order of entry this week but trainer Anthony Cummings says a high attrition rate and Cluster's untapped potential can compensate of her lack of earnings.
"Logically she has to perform to earn money to get in," Cummings said.
"In winning she would be exempt from the ballot for the Golden Rose but the money for winning solves the problem in any event.
"While a win is what you're all about, second isn't bad in terms of getting into the Golden Rose."
Cluster drew the widest of 14 acceptors for Saturday's $125,000 Group Three race which features modern-day Australian turf stars Eremein, Mentality, Denman and Pierro on its on honour roll.
Denman completed the Run To The Rose-Golden Rose double in 2009 while last year's winner Epaulette ran third to Pierro in the lead-in race before beating stablemate Albrecht in a Rose thriller.
Hugh Bowman rode Cluster when she had to change course in the straight before a last-finishing second to Va Pensiero in the San Domenico.
Always rated highly by the stable on her trackwork and barrier trials, it was her only start since she was beaten out of the placings on debut in a midweek race at Canterbury in April.
But Cluster has been ignored as a winning Run To The Rose chance with $26 on offer in opening betting.
Sidestep, who was also rated unlucky in finishing behind Cluster in the San Domenico, has been posted as the $3.60 favourite.
The Darley colt holds sway at the top of betting from Zoustar ($4.60) and Eurozone ($7).
Zoustar is resuming after a Group One placing in Brisbane during the winter carnival while Eurozone, with Bowman to ride, will be trying to make it four wins from as many starts after an all-the-way victory in the Rosebud.
San Domenico winner Va Pensiero will be ridden by Nathan Berry who takes over from Tim Clark who will partner the Peter Moody-trained Dissident.
