A plan hatched at the start of winter can be confirmed at the end of it when Ike's Legacy resumes racing in the Run To The Rose.
At stake for the blue blood colt at Rosehill on Saturday will be a berth in the Golden Rose, the richest race of the Sydney spring carnival.
A Golden Rose win would secure Ike's Legacy's future as a stallion because he carries the marketable bloodlines of champion sire Redoute's Choice and Ike's Dream, a mare who earned more than $1 million during her racing career.
And the colt's breeding is close to the top of Vandyke's checklist as he makes a strong case for Ike's Legacy to run well on Saturday.
"He's bred to do it," Vandyke said.
But the trainer knows there's not much use having a mouth-watering pedigree if your horse is missing the athleticism to back it up.
On that score, Ike's Legacy didn't disappoint Vandyke with what turned out to be an against-the-odds win at Warwick Farm on June 12.
Stepping out over 1300m on a heavy track, Ike's Legacy came off the bit much sooner than jockey Peter Robl wanted and he was hunted along to keep in touch with the leader.
It turned out to be a mid-race aberration as the colt regained his momentum to make a winning debut.
"He's shown us he's well worth putting up against the best," Vandyke said.
With Robl riding the Anthony Cummings colt Cluster, Blake Shinn returns from suspension to take the Ike's Legacy mount.
Shinn has ridden Ike's Legacy in three barrier trial outings, including the latest when the three-year-old split two Group One winners in a Rosehill hit-out.
"I thought he trialled terrific last week," Vandyke said. "Mrs Onassis didn't go away from him and he beat Sincero who was having a solid trial."
Ike's Legacy occupies the third line of Run To The Rose betting at $7 and Vandyke insists the colt gets his opportunity to press for a Golden Rose start.
"If we are to be a serious chance in the Golden Rose, he's got to be close to the money on Saturday with a weight advantage," Vandyke said.
