Novellist starts out on road to Longchamp

Saturday 31 August 2013, 11:55am

Impressive King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Novellist runs in the Grosser Preis Von Baden on Sunday with trainer Andreas Wohler keen to stress the Group One is being used as a stepping stone towards Longchamp.

The four-year-old is unbeaten this season, with his Ascot success adding to wins in France and at this weekend's venue, Baden-Baden.

While his win in the mid-summer highlight was not too much of a shock, the ease of his victory certainly was as Johnny Murtagh rode him out to a five-length success over Irish Derby winner Trading Leather.

Novellist finished fourth in this race 12 months ago behind Danedream but he has looked a different proposition to date this season.

Nevertheless, with his main aim being the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on October 6, Wohler has warned that his stable star will not be at his peak.

"All is going well with the horse, I am happy with his work at home," said Wohler.

"It is a Group One on Sunday, but for us it is a prep race."
