Aussies Love Sport wins G3 Ming Dynasty

Saturday 7 September 2013, 4:05pm

Little more than an hour after he retired Group One winner Mrs Onassis, prominent owner Gerry Harvey welcomed a new star to his team when her half-brother Aussies Love Sport claimed his first stakes win.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Aussies Love Sport ($3.20) asserted his dominance over the $3.10 favourite Open Book in the final 200 metres of Saturday's Group Three Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Randwick to set up a possible Golden Rose start.

Earlier, Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis finished last of the nine runners in the Concorde Stakes, hastening her retirement to stud.

"Mrs Onassis will be served by Redoute's Choice," Harvey said.

"She has been a good mare and her mother, Miss Jakeo, has been a great mare.

"I'm not sure where Aussies Love Sport goes next. We will discuss the Golden Rose with Gai.

"He might go to Melbourne for the Caulfield Guineas or stay here and head to the Spring Champion Stakes."

Harvey owns Aussies Love Sport in partnership with the Segenhoe group.

Champagne Cath ($15) led the Ming Dynasty field and held on well to finish third, 1-1/4 lengths from the winner and just a neck from the runner-up who was crunched late from $4 to his starting price.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Mrs Onassis retires with the record of eight wins from 22 starts after claiming her Group One earlier this year.
