Atlantic Jewel nominated for two races

Monday 9 September 2013, 5:38pm

Cox Plate favourite Atlantic Jewel is the headline nomination for Saturday's Moonee Valley program but which race she contests remains to be decided.

The unbeaten Atlantic Jewel, brilliant winner of the Group One Memsie Stakes first-up after 16 months on the sidelines, has been nominated for the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and the Group Two Stocks Stakes, both over 1600m.

The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes is an open weight-for-age event which has attracted 12 nominations including Atlantic Jewel's Australian Cup-winning Mark Kavanagh-trained stablemate Super Cool, while the Stocks Stakes also has 12 nominations and is restricted to mares.

With a rating of 117, Atlantic Jewel is four points clear of Super Cool in the Dato Tan while in the Stocks Stakes she is 19 points above the next highest-rated mare in the entries.

Nominations for both races have been extended until Tuesday morning.

Last year's Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Happy Trails will be striving to go back-to-back while the Gai Waterhouse-trained Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente will be after his first Australian victory.

Happy Trails will be reunited with Damien Oliver who will ride at his first metropolitan meeting since steering the Paul Beshara-trained horse to a Group One victory in the Emirates Stakes on November 10 last year.

Oliver has spent the past 10 months serving a ban for betting on a horse in a race in which he rode a rival runner.

Trainer David Hayes has entered three horses - Spacecraft, Bass Strait and Gerontius - while Peter Moody has last start winner Lidari and High Esteem nominated.

New Zealand stayer Sangster is entered to make his first Australian appearance since his third in the Group One BMW in the autumn.

Nominations for the Group Two McEwen Stakes, a 1000m weight-for-age sprint, have also been extended after nine entries were received on Monday.

Group One Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Moment Of Change is nominated to resume in the McEwen, as is dual Group One-winning mare Platelet who claimed the Robert Sangster Stakes-Goodwood double in Adelaide last preparation.
