Myboycharlie Strikes Again!

Tuesday 10 September 2013, 11:58am

THAT'S MY BOY TOO!

10 September 2013    JUST 48-hours after Group 2 Danehill Stakes winner Charlie Boy became Myboycharlie's first Australian stakeswinner, 2YO Salai opened the Vinery resident's northern hemisphere account with a soft win in the Prix Etalons La Cauviniere L. (1600m) in France.

Coincidentally, both Charlie Boy and Salai were the first winners for Myboycharlie in the southern and northern hemispheres respectively.

Salai (2c Myboycharlie – Mabadi by Sahm) came from last to round up his rivals for the premiership winning combination of jockey Christophe Soumillon and trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.

“We decided to wait and the lively pace set by Footprint helped him settle,” Soumillon said.  “After that, it was just a case of finding a way through although my horse was laying in.  He won with a margin.”

The Prix Etalons la Cauviniere at Craon has been a reliable guide for juveniles in recent years – Soumillon and Rouget won it last year with Alterite (Literato) and she went on to finish a close-up third in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp.

Salai was coming off a last-start loss in a Listed race over 1200m in Bordeaux on August 5.  “Jean-Claude told me he needed a longer distance,” owner Hervé Morin said.  “The pace was quick today and that suited our interests.”

Connections will now consider setting Salai for the Prix Jean -Luc Lagardere Gr.1 (1400m) at Longchamp on October 6.

Salai defeated Stellar Path (Astronomer Royal) by more than two lengths on Monday

Rouget bought Salai for 55,000 euros at the 2012 Arqana October Yearling Sale.  His dam Mabadi (USA) won at Chester in July 2006 before moving to California where she was G2 placed at Santa Anita.

Salai's 2 1/2-lens weekend triumph is his third win from 5 career starts.

"To have two stakeswinners in the space of two days is obviously a fabulous result for the stallion,'' Vinery's Adam White said.

"He made a great start here in Australia with his two-year-olds and it's heartening to see that already two of them (Charlie Boy and Dowdstown Charlie) has earned black-type at three.''

Myboycharlie served 94 mares in his first season at Vinery, a figure which shot up to 198 in the last completed season due to his early success and ability to produce such consistently good yearlings..

Myboycharlie's current Australasian progeny include; Charlie Boy (Won Group 2 VRC Danehill Stakes/3rd Group 2 ATC Silver Slipper Stakes), Charlestown (2nd Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes), Dowdstown Charlie (3rd Listed Rosebud Quality) and Charles In Charge (Won Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic).

Charlie Boy’s trainer Gerald Ryan has indicated a Group 1 Caulfield Guineas start is in the offing for Charlie Boy who has so far returned his owners close to $300,000 on their initial $80,000 outlay at the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
