Thornton to try his luck in Sydney racing

Tuesday 10 September 2013, 5:04pm

Victorian apprentice Damien Thornton will have his first ride at Warwick Farm on Wednesday with the prospect of more to come in Sydney.

Thornton will join the Gerald Ryan stable on loan from his trainer father Glenn with a view to a possible three-month stay.

He has two rides at Warwick Farm on Mendivil for Henry Dwyer and Wow Factor for Ryan.

Thornton finished 10th in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership last season with 25 metropolitan winners.

Ryan believes he can be competitive in Sydney while the senior riders commit to carnival rides.

"I know his father Glenn and I'm only too happy to take him on," Ryan said.

"We'll try it out for a couple of weeks and if he likes it, it will turn into three months.

"Sydney - you either love it or you hate it. If he doesn't like it I won't hold him to it."

As well as being talented on the racetrack, Thornton is an accomplished equestrian rider and hopes to continue that pursuit.
