Kavanagh plays it safe with Atlantic Jewel

Mark Kavanagh admits he has taken the softer option by placing Atlantic Jewel in a weight-for-age mares race at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Kavanagh has elected to run the undefeated star in the Group Two Stocks Stakes, bypassing a tougher assignment in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes on the same program.

The trainer is content with his decision to take a conservative approach with Atlantic Jewel who spent 70 weeks sidelined with injury before she resumed last month and demolished a smart field in the Group One Memsie Stakes.

"We're just looking to the future and making sure we have her right for later on in the carnival," Kavanagh said.

"You have to look after the horse and make sure you don't do too much with them too early.

"It's `gently, gently' getting these horses back and the art is not putting too much pressure on them too quickly."

With a rating of 117, Atlantic Jewel is 19 points above the second highest-rated mare in the Stocks Stakes, Oasis Bloom.

She was successful at her only start around the Valley and Kavanagh doesn't expect the tight-turning circuit to pose any difficulties this time.

"She's a winner at the track in her only start there so expect some magic on Saturday," Kavanagh said.

The Cox Plate favourite is at the unbackable price of $1.10 on Saturday with Oasis Bloom next in betting at $15.

Atlantic Jewel's stablemate, Caulfield Cup equal favourite Super Cool, is not getting the same kid glove treatment and he will take his place alongside several other Group One performers in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m).

He finished third behind Atlantic Jewel and Ferlax in the Memsie and has won second-up in the past.

"We'll see him running on strongly over the mile but certainly he will be better once he gets out to longer trips," Kavanagh said.

Super Cool, the $3 favourite, is one of three Group One winners in the race which also boasts Emirates Stakes hero Happy Trails, who won the Dato Tan Chin Nam last year, and Auckland Cup winner Sangster.

The in-form Peter Moody-trained French raider Lidari and last year's Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente add further depth to the race.
