Ecuador in spring poser for Waterhouse

Saturday 14 September 2013, 3:15pm

Gai Waterhouse has covered all bases with the promising Ecuador, an all-the-way winner at Rosehill on Saturday.

The four-year-old holds entries to the country's biggest spring races - the Cox Plate, Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, Epsom Handicap and the Metropolitan.

But whether he gets to any of them depends on where he goes to get his rating and prize money up after winning the McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (1800m) with 59.5kg.

Even Waterhouse, who bought the horse from New Zealand, was unsure.

"He's in the Cox Plate, he's in everything," Waterhouse said.

"He is an outstanding prospect. He was never out of second gear.

"He is a horse with a lovely action. You can't buy it. Well ... in fact you can because I did.

"We'll look at things over the next two weeks and see where we go from here."

Tommy Berry sent the $1.65 favourite straight to the front and he held off Diamond Jim ($71) by three lengths with Multilateral ($4.80) another length away.
