Randwick all-weather track right as rain

Tuesday 17 September 2013, 5:18pm

A new all-weather track at Randwick has passed its first test with 16 horses galloping on the surface on Tuesday morning.

The Kensington track is on the inside of the course proper which was in the heavy range after overnight rain while the new track was still dead.

Track manager Nevesh Ramdhani said the StrathAyr surface, which is used at Moonee Valley, had coped extremely well.

"This was the first time we have galloped horses on the Kensington track after heavy rain and we were very happy with what the jockeys came back to tell us," Ramdhani said.

"Over 80 mil of rain in 24 hours would see most tracks heavy or even unusable but we wanted to see how the new surface would cope and it has come through with flying colours.

"It is remarkable that after all the rain it was still essentially the perfect surface in a dead 4."

A total of 16 horses used the surface for Randwick trainers including Gai Waterhouse, John O'Shea, Anthony Cummings, Bart and James Cummings, Peter Moody and visiting Queensland trainer Kelso Wood.

The Kensington track is laid with a special mesh using the StrathAyr technology which provides a reinforced profile for the track to include exceptional drainage capability, as well as a structure to better withstand damage caused by continual use.

Further gallops and testing will take place over the next few weeks before a race meeting on the track on October 7.
