Toydini storms into Epsom Hcp favouritism

Wednesday 18 September 2013, 6:17pm

Trainer Guy Walter is on track to end a hoodoo and make amends in the Group One Epsom Handicap after the favourite Toydini won the Group Three Cameron Handicap at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Ridden by Blake Shinn, Toydini came down the centre of the track to beat the Peter Moody-trained High Esteem by 1-1/4 lengths.

Only one horse, the Gai Waterhouse trained Excellerator, has completed the Cameron-Epsom double when he was successful in 2002.

Walter has not won an Epsom but ran second with Toydini's dam, Johan's Toy in the 2005 Epsom.

Toydini has firmed from $10 to $6 in Epsom betting and is now outright favourite to win the famous Randwick mile.

"Hopefully Toydini can make amends and give me an Epsom win," Walter said.

"This horse is very much like her mother, a sprinter-miler, and I have to train him the same way and that is to keep him fresh and space his runs.

"He won't have another run before the Epsom but he will have a couple of good gallops."

Toydini carried 58kg in the Cameron and drops to 52kg in the Epsom but is liable for a penalty.

"I suppose he will get a penalty for this win - perhaps I shouldn't say that," Walter said.

Shinn is certainly hoping that Toydini gets a 2kg penalty.

"I couldn't ride him under 54 kilograms," Shinn said.

The jockey said he had been confident a long way from home that Toydini could win.

"He settled well and all I had to get was a clear run," Shinn said.

"There is definitely improvement in the horse."

Walter was also impressed with the win.

"He sat wide all the way with 58 kilos and finished the race off well," Walter said.

"He is a developing into an outstanding horse.

"The plan all along has been to run him in the Epsom then take him to Melbourne for the Waterford Crystal Mile and the Emirates.

"He is still in the Cox Plate but I don't think he is a 2000-metre horse."
