Fast Dragon will put his spring carnival ambitions on the line in Saturday's Gloaming Stakes with New Zealand trainer Bruce Wallace expecting the 1800 metres to allow him to show his best.

Wallace has a big opinion of the colt but the three-year-old has been run off his feet in two Sydney starts over 1100 and 1400 metres.

He was a pleasing second in a 1200m barrier trial at Randwick on Friday and the Group Three Gloaming will determine where to go next with Fast Dragon who holds entries to the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12 and the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on the same day.

Fast Dragon's only win in five starts so far came in the Listed Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie in April.

Wallace watched the barrier trial before flying home to supervise veteran Mufhasa who made a great return on Saturday when second in the Group One Windsor Park Plate at Hastings to set up a return to Australia for a possible tilt at the Toorak Handicap which he won two years ago.

"Fast Dragon needs the extra distance and this is the race that will tell us whether he is up to what we think he is," Wallace said.

"He is a big colt and as a young horse he was a bit dumb but he is maturing."

The Auckland-based Wallace trains Fast Dragon for Hong Kong businessman and long time client Peter Chu who also races horses under the Able International banner.

Chu has not been tempted to import Fast Dragon to Hong Kong, preferring to keep him in the southern hemisphere with a view to establishing the son of Fastnet Rock as a future stallion.

"Peter is a great owner to have and he is happy to let us see if we can make a stallion proposition out of Fast Dragon," Wallace said.
