Singleton to build on trial win momentum

Tuesday 24 September 2013, 3:47pm

Scott Singleton is hoping to capitalise on his success during a high-profile barrier trial session this week with an even more important win on Wednesday.

Singleton trained a winner during Sydney's official two-year-old trials at Randwick on Monday, providing an early sign his decision to boost his juvenile numbers could be a wise one.

But with the Ad Valorem youngster Adjective to be monitored before a decision is made on his immediate future, Singleton will turn his focus to one of the established horses in his Hawkesbury stable.

He will start Dark Brown Sugar in the Canterbury Park Handicap at Canterbury, confident the mare can rebound from a first-up Wyong run at Listed level where nothing went right.

"Peter Robl rode her at Wyong and he said the track was a bit shifty and from the outset she just didn't travel at all," Singleton said.

"She's a funny mare in that when the surface is chopped up or a bit uneven she just won't go."

Dark Brown Sugar was also posted wide in the Mona Lisa Stakes and dropped out in the straight to finish with the tailenders.

"Given the circumstances, I'd just put it in the forgive file and she does seem pretty well placed after the claim at Canterbury."

Dark Brown Sugar drops in class to a Benchmark 75 but Wednesday's field of fillies and mares promises to be a better-than-average midweek test.

Her rivals include Gamba, beaten once in five starts, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Porcellanus and Royal Descent's unbeaten sister Chateau Lafaite.

Chateau Lafaite is also an acceptor for the Casino Prince @ Vinery Handicap (1250m), a benchmark race made up of all last-start winners, including Woodbine, a son of the 2006 Golden Slipper winner Miss Finland.
