Susashi aiming for fourth straight win

Apprentice Anthony Allen's support role in rejuvenating the sprinting career of Susashi hasn't gone unnoticed by trainer Steele Ryan.

Susashi is undefeated in three starts this campaign, all with Allen in the saddle, and they will attempt to make it four straight wins in Saturday's Powerade Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm.

"All the talk has been about how gelding the horse at the end of his last campaign and sorting out his hoof problems has improved him but we don't seem to mention the part that Anthony's played in getting him to race so well," Ryan said.

"Every instruction I've given him he's followed to the letter and I couldn't fault the way he's ridden him."

Allen celebrated his 21st birthday on Wednesday and is due to complete his apprenticeship in the next 12 months.

Ryan is accustomed to Susashi drawing outside alleys this campaign.

"Saturday will be the third time from four runs he's had to come from the outside alley but it's not stopping him from winning so hopefully it won't this time," he said.

"Mind you, he's got some stiff competition as far as speed runners go against him with Rocky King drawn the rail and some other good sit-and-sprint horses in the race."

Ryan said wide barriers have prevented him from refining Susashi's racing pattern.

"If he could race the way I'd like him to, sitting about a length off the leader, I've got no doubt he'd break the clock the last couple of furlongs because he can let down strong," he said.

"When he won first-up at Ipswich, even though it was only over half a mile, he ran his last two furlongs in 32 and change on a heavy 9 (track)."

Ryan has kept Susashi fresh since the gelding won at Doomben on August 31 and is happy with his condition going into Saturday's assignment.

"He's been genuine this prep and finishing his races off unlike previous campaigns so there's no reason for me to think he won't do it again on Saturday," he said.

Beyond Saturday, Susashi will have one more start before being aimed at the Magic Millions Sprint in January if Ryan rates his form good enough.
