Eclair Big Bang ready for Guineas Prelude

Saturday 28 September 2013, 2:14pm

A last-start Group Two placing from Eclair Big Bang confirmed jockey Dom Tourneur's opinion that he is up to the challenge in Sunday's Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Eclair Big Bang went into the Danehill Stakes last start as the winner of his only two runs in Adelaide and he acquitted himself well at Flemington to finish third behind Charlie Boy and Kiss A Rose.

The performance proved to Tourneur that Eclair Big Bang was capable of competing well in Melbourne and also that he is better suited racing around a corner which he didn't get at Flemington.

"I think he's a genuine chance on his last run," Tourneur said looking ahead to Sunday's 1400m Group Three at Caulfield.

"He showed that he was able to handle the transition to Melbourne racing.

"He didn't disgrace himself and I think his work has improved since.

"He's also a better horse around a corner."

Tourneur said Eclair Big Bang was "like a lost sheep out there" racing on the straight course at Flemington for the first time in the 1200m sprint.

"He didn't know what to expect down the straight and because of that he wanted to get running early and got a bit excited," the jockey said.

"Over 1400 metres with a bit of cover I think will suit him more."

Eclair Big Bang faces another stiff test on Sunday in the Guineas Prelude as he lines up against Caulfield Guineas favourite Long John as well as classy colt Fast `n' Rocking, untapped gelding Marwood and Danehill Stakes winner Charlie Boy.

A strong performance would likely clinch a Caulfield Guineas start for Eclair Big Bang.

"I've always had high expectations of this horse and I made note of that to (trainer) Phillip Stokes," Tourneur said.

"Sunday will tell us more but if he runs well it just proves what we thought of him."
