Paddy Busuttin back in spotlight at Farm

Wednesday 2 October 2013, 4:41pm

The man who was instrumental in guiding the career of Chris Waller was back in the limelight at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Paddy Busuttin trained his first Brisbane winner since relocating to the Gold Coast three months ago when Karl The Great won Wednesday's Gallopers Sports Club Handicap (1000m).

Busuttin began a long and successful career in New Zealand before leaving to train in Singapore for a decade and, later, Macau for two years.

After taking a year long sabbatical after his stint in Macau, Busuttin couldn't resist the urge to return to training.

"I liked the lifestyle of swimming and enjoying the Queensland sunshine but I also missed the horses," he said.

Busuttin has a team of eight horses in work at the Coast, and derives immense pleasure from seeing Waller, his former protege, setting new standards in his training career in Sydney.

Waller left school in Foxton to work for Busuttin and was entrusted with the job of travelling with outstanding stayer Castletown during his Australian campaigns.

Castletown won 16 races, six at Group One level, in a 103-start career for Busuttin which included three Wellington Cups.

"It's a big thrill to see Chris doing what he's doing and also my son Trent winning the Victoria Derby with Sangster was something special," Busuttin said.

Karl The Great was ridden by Vinnie Colgan who is keen to break into the competitive Brisbane riding ranks.

Colgan rode many winners for Busuttin in Macau and moved to Queensland after a stint of riding in South Australia which ended last month.

Karl The Great ($11) burst through a narrow gap on the fence in the straight to win by a neck from Leealan ($2.70).

"From gate one I didn't want to lead so I was happy when one crossed in front of me and I was able to get some cover," Colgan said.

"He quickened up quite nicely on the turn and when he saw the gap he hit the line nicely."
