John Thompson is at a loss to explain Tremec's failure to beat a runner home so far this campaign.

But the trainer is looking for the Group-winning stayer to turn his form around in Saturday's Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington.

Tremec has finished last in the Warwick Stakes (1400m), Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and Naturalism Stakes (2000m) but rises in distance on Saturday and Thompson has opted for a gear change.

The son of Zabeel will also be re-united with jockey Craig Newitt who partnered him to victory in the Group Two Chairman's Quality (2600m) in Sydney in April.

"Tremec has been working well and blinkers go back on this time," Thompson said.

"Froggy (Newitt) came and galloped him (at Flemington) on Tuesday and he, like me, can't understand why he's been running so badly.

"Hopefully he turns his preparation around this Saturday.

"On his work he should be running a lot better."

The field for Saturday's race includes the Lloyd Williams-owned pair Sea Moon and Tanby.

The race will also be a telling one for trainer Mike Moroney with import Araldo.

Moroney said Araldo gets to his right trip in Saturday's event and the trainer has decided to take the blinkers off.

Araldo was a last-start third to Star Rolling and Let's Make Adeal in an 1800m Listed race in Adelaide.

"He threw another little curve ball at us last start. If he had gone straight he would have won," Moroney said.

"From the top of the straight until the winning post all he wanted to do was lay all over the horse inside of him."

Araldo, a Group One placegetter over 2400m in Germany, finished second last in his Australian debut over 1700m.

Moroney said the major staying races might come around too quickly for him this year but he's willing to give the horse the chance to make it into the Melbourne Cup field.

"This next run is going to start telling the tale because he's getting up to his right trip," Moroney said.
