A frustrating day in different states for leviathan owner Lloyd Williams and jockey Hugh Bowman turned around when the pair combined to win the Group One Metropolitan with Seville at Randwick.
Williams's highly touted import Sea Moon was relegated to second in the Listed Bart Cummings at Flemington while Bowman's mount Streama was pipped by Boban in the Epsom Handicap on Saturday.
Seville ($10) made up for the disappointment with a Melbourne Cup qualifying effort in the Metropolitan (2400m), winning by a half length from Julienas ($6) with Sneak A Peek ($19) a neck third.
"It's turned a frustrating day into a very good day," Bowman said.
"I was very proud of the mare Streama but I must admit I thought I'd won.
"I was pretty gutted when I hadn't. But that's racing and all's fair in love and war."
Julienas took up the role of front runner with Seville parked third before making his run on the inside.
Favourite Prince Cheri ($2.90) never improved on his sixth throughout, missing the opportunity to run in the Caulfield Cup.
Jim Cassidy's bid for his 100th Group One winner ended sadly when his mount Lucripetous was pulled out of the race with a suspected broken shoulder and subsequently euthanised.
"He was travelling nicely. It was really sudden," Cassidy said.
Asked if he was OK, Cassidy it was "nothing a few scotches won't fix".
Bowman was in a more buoyant mood, saying the race had panned out exactly as he hoped.
"I was just travelling so well," he said.
"I was following the right horse, Julienas. I knew he would take me into the race.
"When Tommy (Berry) made a beeline to get off the rail, I thought, 'well I'm just going straight up there' and the horse was primed for the event and delivered accordingly."
Bowman's association with Williams includes this year's Sydney Cup on Mourayan who finished eighth in the Metropolitan carrying top weight of 58kg.
