Reigning United States horse of the year Wise Dan has been beaten by Silver Max in the Group One Shadwell Mile at Keeneland.
Because of heavy rain earlier on Saturday afternoon, the race was taken off the turf course and run at 1-1/16 miles (1700m) on the polytrack.
The win has secured a Breeders Cup Mile start for Silver Max who is trained by Dale Romans and was ridden by Robby Albarado.
Albarado sent Silver Max to the lead out of gate nine and crossed towards the rail while Wise Dan went wide on the first turn.
John Velazquez had Wise Dan in the clear on the far outside and moved into second as the field approached the home turn.
Wise Dan moved to within a length of the leader approaching the top of the straight but could get no closer.
He had won his previous nine starts and Velazquez said he did not show his usual dash on the waterlogged track.
