Royal Empire confirms Cup bid

Royal Empire's second in a Group Three race at Ascot has confirmed his trip to Australia for the Melbourne Cup.

He will be Godolphin's only runner in the race and Kerrin McEvoy has been booked to ride.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Royal Empire went straight into quarantine after finishing second to Secret Number in the Grosvenor Stakes (2400m) on Saturday.

"Royal Empire is improving with every race," bin Suroor said.

"The ground is usually good to firm at Melbourne, which will suit him, and I think two miles will be perfect. Kerrin McEvoy is set to ride him."
