Queenstown, Porcellanus in G3 Angst test

Tuesday 8 October 2013, 4:08pm

Two Tulloch Lodge mares who fell short of the mark at their only black-type starts as three-year-olds will be given a second chance in the Angst Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Queenstown and Porcellanus will take their place in the Group Three support race to the Spring Champion Stakes after encouraging returns to racing.

Of the pair, Queenstown is the more experienced with nine starts returning three wins and four placings.

She was given her chance in the Adrian Knox Stakes - a traditional Australian Oaks lead-up - only to finish beyond midfield before ending her autumn campaign with a Rosehill win over 2000m.

A more immediate guide to her Angst prospects will be her luckless first-up run at Warwick Farm where she bungled the start before a half head defeat.

"It was just unfortunate her back legs went from underneath her just as she was coming out," trainer Gai Waterhouse's right-hand man Mark Newnham said.

In Porcellanus, Newnham said the stable also had a mare of genuine promise.

"We probably threw her into the deep end in the Queensland Oaks but with fillies you don't get many chances," he said.

"But looking at it the trip up there probably seasoned her up a bit."

Porcellanus had her first start since running down the course in the Queensland Oaks when she found the line in a generous manner at Canterbury on September 25.
