A Randwick book of rides which includes a stayer chasing a back-door entry into the Melbourne Cup and a horse placed in Australia's greatest race has jockey Jay Ford set to leave his mark on Saturday's meeting.
As the Sydney spring carnival closes with four stakes races on Saturday, Ford is hoping his week finishes on a better note than it started.
The jockey who graced the world racing stage with Takeover Target was involved in a race fall at Queanbeyan on Monday.
He emerged unharmed and is looking forward to Randwick as most of Sydney's leading jockeys chase spring riches in Melbourne.
"I actually rang my manager and said `you've done well' because nearly every one of my rides is in the market or expected to run well," Ford said.
"It shows if you hang around enough you are going to pick up something.
"You've just got to patient, work hard and wait for the opportunities like Saturday."
Ford's book includes Kingdoms, one of the main chances in the City Tattersalls Club Cup.
Trainer John O'Shea is banking on Ford's expertise as a left-handed whip rider coaxing the best of the Australian Derby-placed four-year-old.
"He's got a few tricks and I've been lucky enough to get a few results with horses who have been difficult at times," Ford said.
If Kingdoms can find winning form, O'Shea will give the stayer his chance to earn a Melbourne Cup berth through a start in the Lexus Stakes.
Among the most interesting of Ford's rides is the 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday.
Maluckyday steps out for new trainer Joe Pride after two barrier trials which suggest he is far from a spent force on the racetrack.
But bookmakers think Ford's best chance of riding a winner rests with the noted speedster Ichihara in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1100m).
Ichihara has finished midfield in two return runs and has been primed for the sprint with a Wyong barrier trial win last week.
She is the $3 favourite to add to a race record which includes wins in the Magic Night Stakes as a two-year-old as well as last season's Heritage Stakes, Eskimo Prince Quality and Gosford Guineas.
