An easy all-the-way win to Spurtonic at Caulfield on Saturday has trainer Gai Waterhouse considering stepping the talented galloper back up to Group One company.
A well-judged front-running ride from Glen Boss helped deliver favourite Spurtontic ($3) to a 2-1/4 length success in the Group Three David Jones Cup (2000m), two weeks after the gelding's game fourth in the Group One Epsom Handicap in Sydney.
"I'll have a think about it, but he may go to the Emirates Stakes," Waterhouse said.
Waterhouse believes the four-year-old is better suited in handicaps at this stage of his career instead of going to the weight-for-age Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
The champion trainer was full of praise for Boss who controlled the tempo on Spurtonic before letting the gelding go through his gears in the straight to score a convincing victory over Bass Strait ($6.50) with a half length to Garud ($10) in third.
"Boss was just brilliant," Waterhouse said.
"It was really a joy to watch."
Spurtonic, who Waterhouse said was "the dumbest yearling and two-year-old you could ever get", has come of age with four wins from six starts this preparation.
He started his campaign with three straight wins in NSW before dropping in distance when finishing fourth in the Cameron Handicap and Epsom.
Boss was suitably impressed and labelled the victory "easy".
"He's got a very good future," Boss said.
"He was pretty impressive there. It wasn't the strongest race but he played with them."
However, Boss believes the Emirates Stakes isn't the right race for Spurtonic.
"I don't know if he could win a Group One at a mile, not against Boban," the jockey said.
